Special Event: NUMB - Free
The Henry Art Gallery,
15th Ave NE & NE 41st St, SEATTLE
Saturday, July 05, 2008 - 12:00:00 PM
Rated R for language, some drug use and sexual content/nudity. Running time: 93 minutes.
Many thanks to the cunning Charlie F!
Please note: This screening will be followed immediately by FILM RAP, an in-depth conversation with the filmmaker, Harris Goldberg.
Writer/Director Harris Goldberg tells his tragically funny, heartfelt, autobiographical story through Hudson Milbank, (Matthew Perry), a depressed screenwriter who (over)smokes a joint sending him over the edge into what is diagnosed as “depersonalization disorder,” the sense that everything around him is unreal, like living in some hellish dreamlike state. Desperate to feel like himself again, Hudson seeks out every therapy imaginable, running the L.A. shrink circuit as he plummets further into the depth of hopelessness and detachment. As he struggles to cope by watching the soothing Golf Channel, shoplifting to get a shot of adrenaline and surviving a cognitive behaviorist with her own issues, (played brilliantly by Mary Steenbergen), Hudson’s long suffering writing partner, (Kevin Pollak), fears they’ll never work again. Things start to change when Hudson meets Sara, (Lynn Collins), whose relaxed ways and big-hearted spirit make his race to recovery imperative. But even then his relationship becomes threatened by his powerlessness to take on life's risks as he seeks out more extreme measures to get better. He knows she can save him. She knows he has to save himself.

Harris Goldberg was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, a place where you were either chronically cold, chronically depressed or chronically funny. He was blessed with all three. He started doing stand-up at age fourteen, lied and said he was sixteen, years later hosting “The Montreal Comedy Festival” and appearing on Conan O'Brien as one half of the infamous "Blue Man Ass Group" with Rob Schneider which can still be seen on www.harrisgoldberg.com.
Looking up to his older brother, Daniel Goldberg, who wrote and produced such hit films as STRIPES, MEATBALLS, JUNIOR, PRIVATE PARTS, ROAD TRIP and OLD SCHOOL, Harris gave up his dream of being a professional tennis player and followed in his brother’s footsteps to Los Angeles where he sold his first screenplay within a week, signed as a client with William Morris the week after.
Twenty-five studio screenplays later he scored a couple of modest hits writing and co-producing DEUCE BIGALOW: MALE GIGOLO, THE MASTER OF DISGUISE and WITHOUT A PADDLE. (All films he never paid to see himself).
He took a major right turn in 2006 writing the very personal and autobiographical NUMB which was quickly financed as his directorial debut.

PLEASE NOTE: Warren Etheredge of The Warren Report will host an exclusive post-show Q&A with filmmaker Jason Freeland and producer Tim Youd.
Willa Holland and Vinessa Shaw star in this quintessential Los Angeles movie about 3 kids searching for their dreams and running into a lot of Porn, Pot and Rock'n'Roll. If you think you've seen it before, think again. GARDEN PARTY "refuses to go where you expect it to" says John Hartl of the Seattle Times.
The film opens on July 11 in Los Angeles, New York, Seattle and Portland. In Seattle, the film will be playing at the Varsity.
GARDEN PARTY stars Vinessa Shaw, Willa Holland, Richard Gunn, Patrick Fischler and Erik Scott Smith
Writer-director Jason Freeland's feature debut was BROWN'S REQUIEM. Completed in 1998, BROWN'S REQUIEM is an adaptation of James Ellroy's first novel which Jason first attempted to option while still attending USC film school. In partnership with producer Tim Youd, Jason finally optioned the novel and wrote his own adaptation. Call it a sophomore jinx. The past eight years has produced many scripts, countless broken promises and several heartbreaks. It wasn't until Jason started talking to producer Tim Youd about a bunch of short stories he had been writing over the years that GARDEN PARTY was born. In just a few short weeks, the stories became a script. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Jason moved out west to attend film school and currently lives in Los Angeles.
In addition to producing GARDEN PARTY, Tim Youd has produced the feature film BROWN'S REQUIEM, based on the novel by James Ellroy and directed by Jason Freeland. Tim also produced two short films written and directed by Jason, THE DEODORANT SALESMAN BREAKS A SWEAT and MR. NICE GUY, which starred James Gandolfini. Tim's paintings are included in GARDEN PARTY, and he has a cameo in one of the film's last scenes, appearing as an art gallerist interested in those very paintings. He lives in Los Angeles, is married and has three children.

Dave Ming Chang (Eddie Murphy), newly arrived in New York City, may be the ultimate fish out of water. There’s something about him that’s not quite right – for starters, he seems remarkably out of place and uncomfortable in his own body. And for good reason: “Dave” is not a man at all, but a ship made in the image of its miniature-sized captain. It’s Eddie Murphy in Eddie Murphy in MEET DAVE.

EMP|SFM, in partnership with The Warren Report, presents a new film series, Exposed: Inside Film at EMP|SFM. The series includes new films, cult favorites and classic sci-fi and music films. Each screening is followed by a behind-the-scenes look through an interactive discussion with actors, directors or screenwriters associated with the film.
In July, we'll screen the next nightmare from Daniel Myrick, creator of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. THE OBJECTIVE will be followed by a conversation with writer/director Daniel Myrick. Warren Etheredge will host the evening.
Director: Daniel Myrick Principal Cast:Jonas Ball, Matt Anderson, Kenny Taylor, Mike C. Williams, Vanessa Johansson Screenwriters: Mark Patton, Wes Clark Jr., Daniel Myrick Producers: Zev Guber, Jeremy Wall
Less than a decade after THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT successfully dissuaded many would-be campers from venturing out into the woods, one of its co-creators is back with a similarly unsettling descent into the unknown. In the supernatural thriller THE OBJECTIVE, writer-director Daniel Myrick locates the action in a remote mountain region of Afghanistan, where a team of US Special Ops forces is dispatched with the ostensible orders of locating an influential Muslim cleric. The team initially accepts this mission at face value; however, shortly thereafter it becomes clear that Benjamin Keynes, the dispassionate CIA officer assigned to oversee the mission, may have another agenda in mind. As it turns out, three days after 9/11, a CIA reconnaissance satellite picked up a radioactive heat signal coming from the mountains. The agency feared Al-Qaeda may have acquired nuclear arms, while Keynes learned from a local source that what's there could be something even more powerful-and more dangerous. As the team ventures deeper and deeper into the mountains, strange things begin happening, and skepticism about a rumored curse in the region rapidly begins to fade. Jonas Ball, who channeled assassin Mark David Chapman with eerie precision in THE KILLING OF JOHN LENNON, turns in yet another remarkable performance as Keynes, a by-the-book CIA agent whose steely reserve begins to crumble in the face of the unknown. The rest of the cast is roundly excellent, and Myrick once again manages to render a chilling portrait of how what is unseen can be truly the most terrifying of all. --David Kwok, Tribeca Film Festival
Daniel Myrick has written and directed feature films, television specials and commercials, most famously the award-winning smash hit, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. With BLAIR WITCH, Myrick co-created one of the most innovative and
highest-grossing independent films of all time, coupled with one of the most
popular and influential websites in the history of motion pictures. Today, it
still retains the highest ratio of box office gross to production budget of any
theatrical film. Myrick recently completed SOLSTICE, which he also co-wrote
and directed. THE OBJECTIVE wrapped principle photography in Morocco and is
his best work to date.

JBL Theater @ EMP,
325 5th Ave N (at Seattle Center), SEATTLE
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 7:00:00 PM
Many thanks to the brilliant team of Jayce and Tiffany B!
Warren Etheredge of The Warren Report welcomes filmmakers Tiffany and Jayce Bartok, producer Joelle Carter and producer/cinematographer/editor Andy Bates for an exclusive post-show discussion and salute to The King.
In July, ALTERED BY ELVIS will be screened followed by a conversation with filmmakers Tiffany and Jayce Bartok. Local film connoisseur Warren Etheredge will host the evening.
ALTERED BY ELVIS is a documentary exploration of lives deeply and permanently
affected by Elvis Presley. As a society we know everything there is to know about Elvis Presley, but what about those he left behind?
ALTERED BY ELVIS follows those who have been imprinted, fathered, fulfilled and
even destroyed by the King of rock and roll. The love for Elvis is contagious, and
everyone knows someone that claims to be – “Elvis’ number ONE fan”. However,
what if we dig much deeper to find the untold stories of the people he left behind...
the ravages of pop culture. We will follow these individuals home and show the
viewer their own lives. How they literally walk with Elvis - in his shadow, with his
ghost and in his light - still to this day. We will hear Larry Geller’s recounting of
styling Elvis’ hair for the star’s funeral and hear about the outrageous tales of
devotion from fans ... and the reason why Jimmy HATES Elvis.
Most certainly we will see what it is like to have been truly ALTERED BY ELVIS.
Arriving in New York from her hometown of Portland, Oregon with her BFA in Musical Theatre from University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Tiffany Bartok appeared in several productions around Manhattan, her favorite being the starring role in Eurydice at the Storm Theatre. She has achieved success as a makeup artist, painting the faces of a variety of celebrities from Daphne Rubin-Vega to Rue MacClanahan. Recently, she starred as Hayley Mills' daughter in Red Sky Pictures' and Vinyl Foote's debut collaboration, "Stricken", a short film written and directed by Jayce Bartok. She and Jayce premiered ALTERED BY ELVIS at the Memphis International Film Festival.
After appearing in numerous films and television shows as an actor, most notably Richard Linklater’s SUBURBIA, John Frankenheimer’s ANDERSONVILLE and Tom McCarthy’s THE STATION AGENT, Jayce
Bartok was inspired to write and direct, “Stricken”, a short film starring Hayley Mills which made its world premiere at the Vail Film Festival. Eager to embark on a larger project, he produced and directed ALTERED BY ELVIS. THE CAKE EATERS, Jayce’s deeply personal feature screenplay, completed production in July of 2006, directed by Mary Stuart Masterson and starring Bruce Dern, Kristen Stewart, and Aaron Stanford. LIVINGSTON AVENUE and TINY DANCER, Jayce’s newest screenplays, are currently in development. With one produced feature script and an acclaimed documentary under his belt, Jayce steps into the realm of feature directing with THE WEDGES, a stark, gritty drama set in the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina in the 1980’s.
Andy Bates has been creating award winning work for such companies as
Rubbermaid, The Hoover Company, Invista, PGRDi, EDS, AMD and First Data for the past 10 years. During this time Andy was also recognized for independent projects such as the Best Cinematography award for his collaborative work in the 48 hour film festival short, “Wired”, and filming and editing the Steve Almaas & Ali Smith’s music video “Moving In Your Sleep” which was featured on the Paisley Pop label's "Stand-Ins for deciBels' A Tribute to the dB's" CD. With his wife, Joelle Carter, they founded Blarma Productions, a company that develops movies, commercials and music videos.
Joelle Carter is an accomplished actress and producer, and has been acting in film, TV, and theater for over a decade. She can be seen in many projects including the soon to be released thriller COLD STORAGE, cult favorite HIGH FIDELITY, blockbuster AMERICAN PIE 2 and indie winners such as SWIMMING, LISA PICARD IS FAMOUS and JUST ONE TIME. In addition Joelle has starred in many television projects including last falls NBC show “Inconceivable”, “Law & Order”, and
many more. She’s also worked on national commercials for companies such as Barilla, Comcast and Cingular.
